Camino route
Camino Primitivo
The original. Alfonso II of Asturias travelled from Oviedo to the newly discovered tomb in the ninth century, and the route that follows his path over the Asturian mountains is the oldest of them all - and the hardest.

Things worth knowing
The first pilgrimage
Alfonso II's journey from Oviedo is the earliest documented pilgrimage to Santiago, which makes this the senior route by roughly two centuries.
The Hospitales route
The high variant between Borres and Berducedo crosses open moorland past the ruins of three medieval pilgrim hospitals. There is no shelter and no village on it. In bad visibility the valley route through Pola de Allande is the sane choice.
Short, but not easy
At roughly 320 km it is one of the shorter through-routes, and it has more climbing per kilometre than anything except parts of the Norte.
Staying connected on the Camino Primitivo
It stays inside Spain the whole way. Walked at an ordinary pace it takes about 14 days, so a plan needs to be valid for at least that long — the days start counting when the eSIM first connects on the trail, not when you buy it.
Coverage on the trail itself is good in towns and along the main valleys and thin in between — that is true of every network, and it is why the useful habit is downloading tomorrow's stage tonight rather than buying a bigger bundle.
