The Camino del Norte was added to the UNESCO listing in 2015 as part of the Routes of Northern Spain, alongside the Primitivo, the Lebaniego and the Vasco del Interior.
It goes up and down all day
The route rarely stays at sea level for long: headland after headland means short, steep climbs. Cumulative ascent over the full route is comfortably higher than on the Francés.
Fewer beds, more planning
Albergues are thinner on the ground than on the Francés and the towns in between are real towns, not pilgrim infrastructure. Booking ahead matters here in summer.
Staying connected on the Camino del Norte
It stays inside Spain the whole way. Walked at an ordinary pace it takes about 34 days, so a plan needs to be valid for at least that long — the days start counting when the eSIM first connects on the trail, not when you buy it.
